Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs), or smoke vents are designed to automatically release smoke and heat in the event of a fire, helping to keep escape routes clear and reduce the risk of smoke inhalation. They are a vital part of a building’s smoke control strategy and are often found in stairwells, corridors, lobbies, and other communal areas.
To ensure AOV systems operate correctly when needed, they must be inspected and tested regularly. Over time, dust, debris, or mechanical faults can compromise their function.
As outlined in BS EN 12101, AOVs should be serviced at least once annually.
A full maintenance visit includes:
- Testing of smoke detectors, call points, and control panels
- Checking actuators and vent operation
- Inspection of cabling and power supply
- Cleaning of vent openings and sensors
- Confirming full system response and reset functions
